ERA-NET

The objective of the ERA-NET scheme is to develop and strengthen the coordination of national and regional research programmes. Authorities identify research programmes they wish to coordinate or open up mutually. The participants in these actions are therefore programme 'owners' (typically ministries or regional authorities defining research programmes) or programme 'managers' (such as research councils or other research funding agencies managing research programmes).

The networking and mutual opening up of research programmes require a progressive approach. The ERA-NET scheme therefore has a long-term perspective, and it is flexible in order to allow for the different ways in which public research funding is organised in different Member States or Associated States.

Active ERA-NETs participated in by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology

Electric Mobility Europe

Building on the achievements, experiences, networks and results of the ERA-NET Plus initiative Electromobility+ (electromobility-plus.eu) 19 European national and regional government-related organisations with a strong interest in advancing electric mobility in Europe set up an ERA-NET Cofund to further advance electric mobility in Europe: the Electric Mobility Europe. This initiative is designed to take transnational e-mobility research and policy exchange towards deployable solutions.

ERA-NET Bioenergy

The objective of ERA NET BIOENERGY is to establish structural co-operation between national bioenergy research programmes in the member states. To support the implementation of the co-operation a direct step by step, pragmatic and flexible approach will be followed, leading towards pilots of transnational research. Based on experience gained a joint bioenergy research strategy will be developed, to ensure that the co-ordination action (CA) will lead to an on-going integration process lasting beyond the period of Community financial support. Involvement of high level management from each of the ERA-NET partners in the project will facilitate appropriate governance and the embedding of project results in the national research policies. The main goals of the project are: - Strengthened European efforts to realise the potential for renewable energy production from biomass and industrial production, by enhancing research co-operation and co-ordination on a European level through networking among bioenergy RTD programmes of national governments; - Improved cost efficiency of the public funding and improved quality of programme results.

ERA-NET COFUND Smart Cities and Communities (2014-2019)

Smart Cities and Communities have been identified as key to achieving the energy efficiency targets for 2020 and 2050. The main objective of this ERA-NET COFUND is to stimulate successful practice and facilitate replicability within Smart Cities and Communities implementation projects and also across projects in order to achieve a technological shift in the current energy system and provide smart and integrated solutions for technology, government and society.
Additional activities within the ERA-NET COFUND are: (A) to work towards a joint call with China and (B) to align national R&D funding with Structural Funds. (A): A structured and systematic approach towards a joint call with China on smart city research will be developed making highest use of existing relations, activities and experience of European Funding Agencies with Chinese partners in order to develop a joint call with China. (B) The realisation of smart cities measures requires large investment volumes. Thus, the combination and clustering of different financing instruments is necessary. In line with the new "smart specialization" strategy of the EC, the proposed additional activities should encourage alignment of RTDI Funding and Structural Funds.
The ERA-NET COFUND Smart Cities and Communities is a joint effort of the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe and the Smart Cities Member States Initiative.

M-ERA.NET - From materials science and engineering to innovation for Europe

M-ERA.NET is an EU funded project which has been established to support and increase the coordination of international funding and research programmes in materials science and engineering. Between 2012 and 2016, the M-ERA.NET consortium, which comprises 37 funding organisations from 25 European countries, will replace a number of smaller ERANETs with a single innovative and flexible ERA-NET. This will provide the European RTD community with access to world leading knowledge and funding programmes across a number of EU member states. The consortium will provide a central forum where substantial pan-European funding and research programmes can be aligned. M-ERA.NET will complement existing instruments and contribute to EU policies whilst supporting the exploitation of knowledge along the whole innovation chain from basic research to applied research and innovation. The M-ERA.NET consortium aims to address societal and technological needs with an interdisciplinary approach, creating an umbrella structure to allow flexible coverage of topics in materials science and engineering. By stimulating the scientific excellence and creation of a new innovation oriented economy, M-ERA.NET will provide a network which delivers lasting impact and significant breakthroughs. - End Date: 31/01/2016

SIINN - Safe Implementation of Innovative Nanoscience and Nanotechnology

The SIINN ERA-NET promotes the safe and rapid transfer of European research results in nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) into industrial applications. National and regional resources will be virtually pooled to create a transnational programme of research. SIINN will bring together today’s fragmented research activities on the potential risks of engineered nanomaterials for environment, human health, and safety.

Smart Energy Systems - ERA-Net

ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems ( https://www.eranet-smartenergysystems.eu/) is a network of owners and managers of national and regional public funding programs in the field of research, technical development and demonstration, coordinated by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) with support of FFG. With ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems we provide a sustainable and service oriented joint programming platform to finance transnational RDD projects , developing technologies and solutions in thematic areas like Smart Power Grids, Regional and Local Energy Systems, Heating and Cooling Networks, Digital Energy and Smart Services, etc.

Together with our associated partners we provide an innovation eco-system, building bridges in the whole innovation chain. Co-creating with partners that help to understand the needs of customers, communities and regions, we team up with intermediaries that support building consortia for re-search, innovation, technical development, piloting and demonstration actions, while at the same time establishing co-operations that can pave the way towards implementation in real-life environ-ments and market introduction.

ERA-Net Smart Energy Systems provides a substantial contribution to turn the Implementation Plan ( https://setis.ec.europa.eu/system/files/set_plan_esystem_implementation_plan.pdf) of the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) Action 4 "Increase the resilience and security of the energy system" into action ( https://setis.ec.europa.eu/implementing-integrated-set-plan/smart-resilience-and-secure-energy-system-ongoing-work).
