Kathrin Renz had already been entrusted with the interim management of the Section since April 2021. In January 2023, after an application process, she succeeded Christian Weissenburger, who retired.

The new Head of Directorate General has a degree in energy and environmental management as well as project marketing and project management. Prior to her interim leadership of Directorate General I, she worked as a technical officer in the Office of the Secretary General at the Ministry of Climate Protection and was Managing Director of IB Renz for Energy and Environmental Management.
