Jürgen Schneider studied chemistry at the University of Vienna, where he successfully completed his diploma and doctoral studies. After working as a university assistant, he moved to the Federal Environment Agency in 1994 to the then Department of Air Hygiene. From 2002 to 2004, Jürgen Schneider worked as a project manager at the WHO in Bonn (Germany). He then returned to the Federal Environment Agency to head the Department of Air Hygiene from 2004 to 2006. From 2007 to 2014,Jürgen Schneider headed the "Economy and Impact" division at the Federal Environment Agency. Since 2011 he has been an authorised signatory and from 2014 to 2017 a member of the management board at the Federal Environment Agency. From January to June 2018, Jürgen Schneider was a member of the extended management board of Umweltbundesamt as company spokesman. In addition, he was and is active in several national and international committees on the topics of air pollution control, energy, climate protection, etc.. He is co-editor of the First Austrian State of the Climate Report.

Jürgen Schneider has been Head of the Directorate General "Climate and Energy" at the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology since 9 November 2020.
